Otherwise, you're doomed to fail at whatever your objectives are for being online in the first place.

Unless, of course, you don't have any objectives.

In which case, you should probably stop reading and figure out what it is that you want from your life.  After all, you need to know where you're going before you'll ever be able to arrive there. </>harsh-words   :-)

If you do know what your objectives are, then it's time to start examining whether or not you're meeting them, starting with the way you're currently representing yourself or your company online.

Personality tends to come through in both written words and the way we interact with people in the virtual world. And just like in the real world, appearance plays a very important role here as well.

You are still judged by the way you "look" and by the graphical images you use to portray and represent you online. This includes any websites you may have, along with the social media properties you claim as your own.

When you use graphics that are dull, dreary, dated, that look like a bad water color painting, or have the slightest aura of "amateur" about them, PEOPLE NOTICE!

They really do.

So let's take a look at a few Twitter pages, and get an idea of what can go wrong with your online appearance.

Twitter Templates Can Be
Tough To Tangle With
(What You See equals What You Get)

When it comes to Twitter, most people believe that the way their profile and background looks on their computer monitor is how everyone else will see it too.

Unfortunately, this is just not true.

Without going into too much technical detail on how screen resolution and HTML and CSS all work together, suffice it to say that Twitter uses the background position code "top left", which forces the background--no matter the size or shape--to position itself in the top left corner of your browser window.

This means that no matter what resolution you set your monitor display settings at, the background will always be positioned to the left.

How does that visually affect what you see?

Below is a background from a popular PLR (Private Label Rights) package that has been both sold and given away extensively over the past year.

Here's what it looks like, without the center Twitter panel, when viewed on a monitor with the resolution setting at 1900x1200:
 

As you can see, if you're using any of the backgrounds from that pack, well... your background is flawed, and simply not wide enough for Twitter.

After extensive research on the Twitter backgrounds people are currently using, it became surprisingly clear to me that the examples you see above are not isolated incidents.

Quite a large number of people who installed their own backgrounds had unknowingly put up graphics that were the WRONG SIZE. 

The chart below shows that increasing numbers of people are using screen sizes of 1024x768 pixels or more. It's a trend that has accelerated over the past year, with approximately 3 out of 4 people in that statistical pool using monitors set at 1280x1024 and above.
 

So this means that more than half of the people who are viewing Twitter profiles with undersized backgrounds see a profile that is not only unattractive... it is downright unprofessional! (Take a look again at the Twitter Profiles above and tell me if you think they look professional or not.)

Seriously, pros don't make these kinds of mistakes.

Well, okay... sometimes they do.

What makes them true professionals is that when they discover a mistake such as this, they correct it as soon as possible!
